Honestly who doesn’t love a gas station corndog? Do yourself one better with these tasty sourdough corndogs. So fun and easy! Perfect for a potluck or a fun meal to make with the kids.

Ishawooa Mesa Hotdogs

1 3/4 cup cornmeal

1 1/4 cup flour

1/4 cup sugar

1 TBSP baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1 egg, beaten

1 1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup sourdough discard

1 TBSP unsalted butter, melted

1 TBSP honey

neutral frying oil, I use tallow

  1. Take hotdogs out of package and cut in half and pat dry with a towel. Insert kabob skewers or popsicle sticks into the center. Let them sit on a plate or rack and dry out (this helps the batter stick).

  2. Mix the wet ingredients and dry ingredients separately then add together and mix the batter. Pour some into a tall glass (something you can dunk the dogs into).

  3. Heat frying oil in dutch oven or large pot, about 2 inches high. Heat to 350°F.

  4. When oil is hot enough, dunk dog into batter one at a time and dip the tip into the oil for 7 seconds before dropping completely in the oil. Use tongs to roll them around making sure they brown evenly. About 2-3 min.

  5. Enjoy hot! with ketchup or mustard. The leftover batter makes great pancakes the next morning.
